A Small Seoul Dumpling List

Not comprehensive, not democratic, just the dumpling places we would text to a friend who landed hungry.

This is the list we started keeping because we got tired of forgetting which places were worth circling back to and which ones were just good because we were cold.

All four of these are places we would gladly take someone on their first week in the city, but only after telling them not to waste a meal on the airport.

Breakfast worth waking up for

Mandu soup before the city is fully awake

Start in Seochon with a bowl where the broth tastes like somebody has been paying attention since dawn. The kimchi here is bright and cold, which is exactly what the dumplings need.

Best one-order spot

The place where we always order the same two plates

There is a pan-fried dumpling plate in Euljiro that has ruined our ability to improvise. We order one steamed, one fried, and then say we will try something new next time. We never do.

Late dinner

Dumplings that still make sense after a long walk

In Mapo, the late dinner option is not elegant and that is part of the point. The skins are a little thicker, the fillings are peppery, and the beer is cold enough to feel corrective.

Detour

The sesame oil stop we keep making between meals

If you are already walking, cut through the market for sesame oil, greens, and one hotteok if there is no line. This is not optional if the weather is doing anything interesting.

Best one-order spot

The half-moon pork and chive mandu with extra vinegar on the side.

Closing note

If you only have one Seoul meal window, do lunch first and keep dinner flexible. The good dumpling days are better when you can decide the last stop based on weather and how far you still want to walk.
